My project centers around exploring the limits of the human body. My work entails presenting various types of food to my subject and documenting her attempts to consume as much as possible until she has reached her breaking point. The photographs are captured at a fixed angle and are displayed in larger formats to emphasize the intensity of the experience.
To execute my project, my approach consisted of conducting research about the body’s capabilities and gag reflexes. I want to document the bodys strengths and limitations. I observed how my model responded to different food and amounts, noting her strategies for maximazing intake and the body’s reaction upon reaching it’s limits.
My method involves presenting my model with various food including Cheez-Its, Oreos, uncooked pasta, uncooked rice, popcorn, cereal, almonds, and marshmallows to fill her mouth with. I documented the moment of which my model couldn’t put all more food in her mouth.
I took influences were Vito Acconci and Thomas Ruff when creating and presenting my work. Acconci inspired me to create a deadpan pan performance and capture it in photographs. Thomas Ruff inspired me to create large scale portraits of my subject. I showcase the bodys limitation and strengths in a moment of deadpan performance. Through these influences, my work aims to illuminate the complex interplay between the body's capabilities and its boundaries.
